RENEE POWELL (PGA/LPGA)

Blog: March-May 2012

This winter has been a busier one for me than normal. After traveling to the PGA Show I thought things would slow down, but not to be the case.

The first weekend of February was the launch of the children's book about my father, "Twice As Good".

Copies of the book are available at $20.00 each and includes tax and shipping. Orders may be sent directly to me at email: cv46@AOL.com, plus I will autograph all copies ordered directly from me.

Both the author Rich Michelson (l) and the illustrator Eric Velasquez (r) are award winning individuals when it comes to childrens books. Both gentlemen traveled to Canton for three wonderful days of promoting and autographing the book. So many people in our area were involved from Walsh University, the Stark County District Library, Canton Art Museum, Canton Chamber of Commerce to several elementary schools.

In mid February the USGA hosted an event at their headquarters in Far Hills, NJ called African American Barrier Breakers and featured the lives of 3 great Americans: Joe Louis, Jackie Robinson and Althea Gibson. Joe Barrow did the presentation on his father, a wonderful gentleman from the Robinson Foundation spoke of Jackie and I was asked to do the presentation on Althea. The event was so warmly received and exceeded all expectations of the USGA. Both myself and Eric Velasquez had an opportunity to autograph and sell "Twice As Good".

The exhibit was not only up the month of February during Black History Month, but will remain for many to view until the end of July. Hope many take the opportunity to visit the USGA.

Over the past few days I have spoken to several elementary and middle schools in my local area about the book and history, responsibity and legacy.

Even though we had some rather seasonally warm days for February, Clearview was still closed for the first two months of the year. It is getting closer now to opening season so my travels will be reduced somewhat.

Next week will be my last long trip for the month of March. I will actually be attending the National Black Golf Hall of Fame in Tampa and was pleased to be asked to emcee the program. All three inductees are people I consider friends. Ann Gregory (who actually has passed) is a person I knew from about age 13. Her daughter JoAnn will be there on behalf of her mother.
The other two are PGA members, Tom Woodard and Adrian Stills, both played the PGA Tour. Congressman Clyburn who is an avid golfer will deliver the keynote express.

I am looking forward to attending this event as my father and I are also inductees into this Hall of Fame. It is wonderful that Jeff Dounavant continues to keep the legacy that his father created many years ago. Jeff and his father were the only father and son African American members of The PGA of America and my father and I were the only African American father and daughter members of The PGA of America.

Wishing all a very healthy and blessed year.
Keep practicing!!!
