DR. OF LAWS DEGREE FROM
ST. ANDREWS
On
June 22, 2006 the University of St Andrews awarded
Charlie Sifford the honorary degree, Doctor of Laws,
only the second American golfer to receive this honour.
The University of St Andrews awarded this honour in
recognition of Charlie's achievements as a golfer
and his perseverance in the face of injustice. (...read

On The Cover: Will Lowery
Will Lowery is on a 5-year
track which he hopes will successfully lead to his ultimate
goal of playing on the PGA Tour. In an opportunity of
a lifetime, Lowery was selected as a cast member on Big
Break Indian Wells that aired on the Golf Channel during
2011.
Growing up in an urban Charlotte, N.C., community, he
admits to starting out with the “wrong crowd,”
and “initially going down the wrong path.”
At the age of five, his father put a golf club in his
hand as a way to teach him life lessons. Will had no idea
of its value at the time.
Mary Riley (L) of Perry, Georgia, fired
a 74-76 to take Runner-Up at Georgia Senior Women's Golf
Championship
Riley celebrated with golf instructor Addie Cobb (r) following
the Championship that was played May 5-6, 2012 at the
Valdosta Country Club and Stonecreek Golf Course. 244
lady golfers participated and this is Riley's second time
placing runner-up in the two day event.
Glow Media Hosts 2nd Annual Glow Golf
Weekend at PGA Village
Over the weekend of October 20 –23, Glow Media reigned
supreme at the PGA Village & Resort in Port St. Lucie,
Florida as several exciting announcements and awards were
presented including: The PGA of America, a Founding Sponsor
of GLOW Golf, who announced its continuing support. Glow
Media, in partnership with Georgetown College announced
that they will present two GLOW scholarships (Glow Scholars)
to multicultural women. Each award, a 4-year scholarship,
valued at $10,000 per year, is designed to help them in
their studies.

Jonathan DePina, President at the
Country Club of New Bedford The
Country Club of New Bedford in North Dartmouth,
Mass., holds the oldest four-ball tourney in
the country. This is also where you will find
Jonathan DePina, President of the Club. DePina
is the first African American to hold this distinguished
position, as well as being the only Black president
of a private club in the country. (Read

Bowen Appointed Golf Coach At Benedict College
Craig Bowen has been named head men's and
women's golf
coach for Benedict College. Bowen has also
served as Executive Director of the National
Minority
College Golf Scholarship Fund, as well as
an instructor at the PGA Tour Academy located
in Ponte Vedra, Fla. He is a graduate of Southern
University in Baton Rouge, La., where he was
a member of the two-time conference championship

C. Johnson Opens New Dominican Republic Resort
Fishing Lodge Cap Cana,
the new luxury villa resort opened Fall 2011
on the Eastern tip of the Dominican Republic,
an area that features more oceanfront holes
than any other layout in the Western hemisphere.
Managed by Salamander Hotels & Resorts,
which is owned by businesswoman Sheila C.
Johnson, The resort includes two restaurants,
two bars, four pools, a wedding chapel, fitness
center, boutique shops, and 30,000 square
feet of event spaces, including two waterfront
plazas and a spectacular outdoor amphitheater.

The National Black Golf
Hall of Fame
NBGHOF inducted three new members at its recent
ceremony held in Tampa, FL. The 2011 inductees
were Joe Louis Barrow,
Jr., CEO of The
First Tee; Rose
Harper, golf industry
entrepreneur and CEO of The Grass Ceiling;
and Dr. Calvin Sinnette,
physician, historian and author of Forbidden
Fairways. Delivering the keynote address was
Steve Mona, CEO of the World Golf Foundation.
The inaugural Archie
Griffin Celebrity Golf Classic
on February 7-8th at the Concession Golf Club
in Bradenton, FL was a big success. Guests
included two-time Heisman Trophy-winner Archie

Becomes New National Sales Manager At STX
World-renowned for its

has appointed Calvin Peete Jr. to head up
its national sales team effective immediately.

the golf industry's foremost authority on
insert face technology and Peete has big plans

Congressman
William Lacy Clay Holds Golf Forum
The 1st Congressional
District of Missouri Congressman, a member
of the Congressional Black Caucus, sponsored
a forum during the Annual Legislative Conference
(ALC) on September 17, 2010.
The forum, “GOLF: Educational and Personal
Advantages for Minority Youth,” was
held in the Washington Convention Center.
The forum examined the immeasurable
benefits that the game of golf provides to
minority youth. Through golf, young
people are taught courtesy, perseverance,
patience, and respect for others. The
educational benefits of the sport were discussed
as several golf programs successfully incorporate
elements that maximize the academic achievement

Bear Huff 'Roars' For A Bright The Future Artises James Huff, "He
was lovingly called Pooh-Bear as an infant and it just
stuck,” says his mom, Sonia, who is of East Indian
descent. The Riverside, Calif., resident is now 6-1/2
years old and it was his dad, James (an African American)
who introduced him to the game of golf. James admits to
including lots of TV time—watching Tiger Woods—to
explain the rules and concept of the game to young Bear.

Minnie Smith At
15, Smith joined the Lonnie Jones Junior Golf Group in
Cincinnati, Ohio and traveled across the Midwest competing
in junior tournaments with such notable young players
at the time like Renee Powell (now a world renowned PGA/LPGA
member), Ann Gregory and Exie O. Shackelford-Ochier. “We
were all something else back then, young and fearless,
ready to take on the world!,” says Smith.(Read

Pete
Brown received
his tour card in 1963 and became the First African
American to Win a PGA event, the Waco Turner Open
(1964). Overall he won 2 PGA victories and is
a 4 time USG (Negro) National Open Champion. (Above:

Brown and his wife, Margaret, celebrated their
55th year wedding anniversary this past April
29, 2012 and their love for one another is stronger
than ever. Yet, Pete (76) is in very poor health
and the Dayton, Ohio couple admits these are difficult

Ghana: AAGD Inaugural Trip to the Motherland Akwaaba
means welcome in Twi, an Akan language, and this
is how Ghanaians will warmly welcome you to their
country. During our publication's trip to Ghana,
five of us traveled from the U.S. to the gateway
to Africa and enjoyed plenty of history, culture
-and yes, lots of challenging golf. Cynthia Hall
(above) is a lawyer by trade and she kept a daily
diary on the journay and details the excitement
of our rounds at 4 courses: the Accra area, Achimota,
Tema and Celebrity golf courses and in central Ghana

grew up playing golf at Langston Golf Course in NE Washington,
DC. Now he fears that this great course
in struggling economic times will be lost. His open
plea to our First Lady tells how over the last decade
Langston golf course has changed the lives of over 20,000
kids and has given under-privileged kids a chance to
learn a new sport. He asks for her to help him save

Midnight Golf To Gain New Training And
Practice Facility in Detroit, Michigan At the urging of the Sports Illustrated Golf
Group, Golf course architect Tom Doak is building a facility
in Detroit for Midnight Golf, a program that teaches inner-city
kids life skills and an appreciation for golf. WATCH

Barbara Wilson - East Lime High School
Wilson is the first African American to play on East Lyme
High School 's (East Lime, CT) Varsity boys golf team.
She clinched the spring 2011 Individual Championship of
the Inaugural Eastern Connecticut Conference Girls Golf
Tournament, shooting a 40 on 9 holes. Though no one else
made States, the Connecticut resident qualified with the
eighth lowest differential for girls individual.

Vincent Johnson (L) and Johnny

are all smiles after their victories at the Advocates
Invitational Pro Tour event in Los Angeles. Johnson won
the $6,000 first prize in the Open division while Allen
received $2,000 for his victory in the Senior division.

Revolution Park Renamed To Honor Dr. Charles "Charlie"
Sifford
The
Revolution Park Golf Course, a public course located on
the west side of Charlotte (N.C.) has been renamed The
Dr. Charles L. Sifford Golf Course at Revolution Park.
The daily-fee municipal course was originally built as
the Bonnie Brae Golf Club and enforced a strict “Caucasians
Only” deed restriction that denied African Americans
the use of the facilities until a landmark court decision
in 1956 struck it down. (Read

Herbert "Turk" Walker April 28, 1937-February 22, 2011
Herb “Turk” Walker started playing in
California in the early 60's and gravitated to teaching
because he enjoyed it very much. Walker was dedicated
to teaching and enlightening youth regarding the
world of golf and became a Master Teaching Professional.
He was inducted into the African American Golfers
Hall of Fame (West Palm Beach, FL) in 2010 and served
as a longtime member of the United States Golf Teachers
Federation (USGTF).

Robert Lee Dunham September 12, 1932-May 17, 2011
A tireless advocate on behalf of minorities, Lee
successfully helped many to acquire McDonald's franchises
and/or become National McDonald's suppliers. He
amassed numerous awards including: McDonald's Corporation
Ronald Award, McDonald's Corporation Golden Arch
Award, The Extraordinary Trailblazer Award and from
National Black McDonald's Operators The Black Businessman
of the Year Award.

E. Clapp is a USGTF Level III Certified Professional Golf
Instructor as well as a Professional Long Drive Participant.
At age 26, with no formal instruction, he decided to start
playing golf again. Using his background in Physical Education
and Sports Science, he figured out a way to accelerate
his golf swing. The expert golfer andcoach is a graduate
of Bethune-Cookman University and reveals his secrets

Renee Powell Receives Honorary Degree at UMES Winter Commencement
Thelma B. Thompson, Ph.D.,
Madame President, University of Maryland Eastern Shore
(UMES) presents Renee Powell (L) with an honorary degree.
Powell is a women’s sports pioneer. She is the second
African American to play on the Ladies Professional Golf
Association tour and has been an ambassador for the sport
much of her life. She is the head golfing professional
at Clearview Golf Club, a historic course her father built
near Canton, Ohio, and where she learned to play. (Read

the second weekend of July, the club hosted its “Two
Seater Open” under President, Gus Nelson at their
home course, University GC, University Park, IL with proceeds
going towards scholarships.

MacFarlane Park After School
In the western part of Tampa, Florida sits
McFarlane Park, a cozy neighborhood in Hillsboro County,
just about half a mile wide with a population density
around 3,608 persons per square mile. But, don’t
let this fool you; the MacFarlane Park Elementary School
is keen on raising kids right and golf has a lot to do

Inaugural Glow Golf Forum on African American Women and
Diversity in the Golf Industry
In an effort to foster the growth of African
American female participation and diversity in the multi-billion
dollar golf industry, the PGA Education Center, at PGA
Village, in Port St. Lucie, Fla., played host in October
to Glow Golf's inaugural forum and golf event entitled,
"Rethink Your Possibilities: Breaking the Grass Ceiling,"
The program was designed to champion and increase participation
in golf by African American female professionals, the
event featured a keynote address by PGA of America Chief
Executive Officer Joe Steranka to an audience of corporate
executives, entrepreneurs and diversity experts. (Read

Lillian
Lambert
Being born on a Virginia farm in Ballsville (50 miles
west of Richmond) in the segregated south did not stop
this quintessential woman from wanting a better life.
At the age of 18 she moved, worked for a few years as
a maid and typist only to discover that education would
be her opportunity for a life filled with many possibilities.
Lambert obtained a BA degree from Howard
University and an MBA from Harvard Business School, simultaneously
achieving a historical milestone by being the first African
American woman to receive a Harvard MBA. Lillian accomplished
things many would deem unattainable. But according
to her, being introduced to the game of golf at the age
of 46 is her favorite milestone. Her handicap is
26 and her lowest score is 91. (Read
